How are the elderly treated in...Mexico?

Currently, Mexico has an aging population with limited services. Since 1990, the number of citizens aged over 60 has increased 118 percent. Although that is impressive, it is also dangerous. It is said that today, Mexico has approximately 12 million seniors. It is estimated that by 2030, there could be more than 20 million.

 

With a multiplying elderly population, needs multiply as well. Mexico News Daily explains, "Geriatric specialists point out that the difficulties for the growing number of the so-called third age- la tercera edad, as they are known in Mexico- are numerous and the demand for specialized services has far outstripped the ability to meet them."

 

There is one trained specialist for every 22,000 seniors. Reportedly, there should be a specialized doctor for every 2,000 to 2,500. A recent study from the National Institute of Health and Aging in Mexico found that 70 percent of the elderly do not receive the medical services they need.

 

Mexican seniors are at a significantly high risk for confronting a number of diseases, such as

hypertension, cancer, and diabetes. It is estimated that over the next decade, up to 30 percent of seniors will suffer from cancer or other critical illnesses.

 

It is admitted that the government in Mexico is not doing their job in making sure that the elderly are well cared for. Mexico News Daily explains that "public policy hasn't kept up with the pace of popular growth."

 

Mexico clearly has work to do pertaining to care and more efficient medial attention for their elderly. If care for the elderly is represented for the elderly in Mexico soon, then hopefully next generations will understand the importance and do the same for their parents and grandparents.
